Sip Your Way Into Spring With These Spring Wine Pairings

Spring is here!

It’s time to say goodbye to snowstorms, boots, gloves, and days that turn into the night by 4 PM! It’s also time to push aside the hearty stews, thick sauces, and the richer winter wines. Spring is here! Say hello to crisp salads, crisp veggies, and delicate flavors, and relax outside with the wines that pair beautifully with this lighter fare.

We’re offering up a few suggestions to get you started as you explore the tastes of spring.

Retreat to the patio or deck with a creamy goat cheese plate paired with a sparkling white from the Loire region of France, such as a sparkling Vouvray or Saumur.

Are you serving a creamy brie? Try it with some champagne! The acidity of these sparkling wines is a perfect match for creamy cheeses, and you can add some berries on the side for the perfect touch.

A chilled glass for a fresh bowl!

Sauvignon Blanc is a trusted partner for salads, but why not try something a little different this spring and pop open a bottle of Grüner Veltliner. Its citrus notes pair nicely with a spinach and orange salad or with some slight bitter greens such as arugula, kale, and radicchio.

You know spring is sprouting when you see delicate pea shoots, snow peas, and tender radishes. Mix these with a simple vinaigrette and pair them with a lovely Rosé such as Nomadica Pink Rover Rosé. Rose is a Californian wine made with pinot noir grapes and presents a slight hint of strawberry while keeping its acidity and minerality.

And then you have the crowning glory of springtime that is notoriously fussy when it comes to pairing well with wines: ASPARAGUS. But fear not! Sauvignon Blanc is a good choice when asparagus is steamed, but if you’re roasting it or adding it to the grill, uncork an Italian Pinot Bianco, a Grüner Veltliner, or a dry Spanish Rosé. You’ll be surprised how well they partner up with the flavors of this controversial vegetable.

Craving a more hearty spring dish?

When it’s time for the main dish, such as a spring lamb,

Pinot Noir is a great choice that won’t compete with the lamb’s delicate flavor. Look for those from a cooler climate, such as a fresh New Zealand or German Pinot Noir, for a perfect pairing. Another great choice would be a Syrah - it compliments any lamb dish with its luscious dark fruit, black pepper, and spice notes.
