Wines from Down Under - All About Australian Wines

You’ve got to admit that when you think of the Land Down Under, you picture a place with crocodiles, kangaroos, a dry Outback, and white, sandy beaches. But Australia also needs to be recognized for having rich soil, cool evening breezes, lush pastures – and a robust wine industry.

Kangaroo Crossing!

Australia is home to more than 2,500 wineries, and even though it produces about half the amount of wine as the U.S., it exports nearly twice as much.

Most of Australia’s wineries are located in the country's southern areas, for they have somewhat cooler climates than its other regions. But it’s not just the climate that gives Australia an edge in producing grapes; the wine industry has put a lot of money and energy behind cutting-edge research and technology.

There’s a wide variety of wines when you’re considering Australian wines. The less expensive, younger wines are sourced in the country's southeastern part. They are “fun” wines that go down easy. The costlier, more complex Australian wines reflect a specific location or region and benefit from an aging process.

Although Australia produces many different grapes, their mainstay is the Syrah – which Australians call Shiraz. This type of wine runs the gamut from less expensive varieties with rich plum and blackberry flavors to more expensive ones that reflect the terrain, climate, soil, and other factors of a particular region. (aka the terroir)

Try a Shiraz from Barossa Valley, home to the oldest vines on Earth. You’ll find that these wines, such as those by Penfolds, Torbreck, and Henschke, express luscious plum and chocolate flavors.

This way to taste delicious wine!

Check out Thomas Wines or Tyrrell’s from the Hunter Valley region for a Shiraz that’s between medium-bodied and full-bodied. These rich, bold wines give you a hint of spice, red fruit, and floral notes.

If you’re looking for a light- to medium-bodied Shiraz with hints of herbs, fruit, and pepper, seek a winery from Western Australia, such as Leeuwin Estate or Frankland Estate.

There are so many different kinds to choose from; it would be fun to explore the world of Australian Shiraz and find a favorite!
