Here’s to a Sparkling New Year
Ready to say goodbye to 2022 and hello to 2023? Nothing says Let’s Celebrate like the sound of a cork popping out of a bottle of Champagne. It’s time to raise our glasses to this past year and toast to all the good things on the horizon. The tradition of opening a bottle of Champagne while celebrating goes as far back as the 1500s when only royalty and the elite could afford to drink it. Even after all these years, it has still kept its high-end status.
If you see a bottle labeled as Champagne – with a capital “C” -- that’s the real deal. Only those wines made in France’s Champagne region can use that name. However, many other wineries use the term champagne (lowercase “c”) for marketing their sparkling editions.
Temperature for Serving Champagne
Most bottles of Champagne should be chilled at about 45° F. Keep an ice bucket handy when serving because it will lose its chill rather quickly.
Champagne Glasses
Interestingly, those in the Champagne region drink their bubbly in traditional white wine glasses. However, a tulip-shaped or fluted glass can make the occasion seem even more festive. Try to avoid the wide-bowled coupe type of glass; it lets the bubbles dissipate quickly and doesn’t provide for any aroma development.
How to Store Leftover Champagne
There may be occasions when you have a leftover open bottle of Champagne, and you’d like to save it for another day. The most important thing is to store it so that the trapped carbon dioxide giving it that fizz, remains as long as possible. Even though there are several hacks for maintaining the bubbles, a Champagne stopper made specifically for sparkling wines is the best method for creating an airtight seal.
