Sip Some Wine in Your Sombrero this Cinco de Mayo!

Line up those wine glasses for you and your friends because Cinco de Mayo is almost here! Yes, we said wine glasses, not shot glasses, because we're going to give you the perfect substitutions for tequila this festive holiday!

Are you ready to throw back some wine with your amigos?! Here are some pairings to prepare you for your Mexican feast!

General Rule of Thumb

Boundaries are so important.

Boundaries are so important.

When you're eating Mexican this Cinco de Mayo, we have a simple rule that may be easy for you to decide which type of wine you'd like to sip. With mild food, you may want to try bold and fruity reds, like Cabs and Zinfandels. With spicer entrees, a lighter and sweeter wine like Riesling and Rosé will bring a nice contrast and serve as your fire extinguisher for when you overestimate your spicy limits.

Tortilla Chips with Salsa and Guacamole

Guacamole is the avocado’s passion project.

Ah, the Mexican version of bread and oil, the most basic set up of every table at every Latin American restaurant - CHIPS and DIP! It's the best way to start your Cinco de Mayo, but which wine will you enjoy with this delicious starter? Choose a light white to balance out the saltiness of the chips and the spiciness of the salsa and guac. We recommend Mala Femmina: chilled, fruity, and just a hint of sweetness to complement the salsa.

Cheesy Nachos with Black Beans

Okay, we have our first drinks, and we've all peeped the menu. It's time to order an appetizer! How about some Cheesy Nachos with Black Beans! Luckily it's a busy night at the restaurant because it's a holiday, of course, and we have time to order another glass of wine! Cleanse your palate with the creamy cheese in the nachos; a sparkling wine will be perfect. Our Black Dog Brachetto is effervescent and fruity - the perfect palate cleanser for your main course.

Beef Barbacoa Tacos

We’d rather line up tacos than tequila.

Now for the plato principal (the main course), Beef Barbacoa Tacos! This traditional spicy favorite is a classic dish that makes a perfect pair for a classic Cabernet Sauvignon. The bold flavor of this wine holds up nicely to the light spice of this dish, and the dark fruit flavors lighten up this rich meat. Try our Black Dog Cabernet with your tacos this spicy holiday!

Tres Leches

Are you ready for dessert? You'll love the Tres Leches, a delicious sponge cake soaked in three kinds of milk: evaporated milk, condensed milk, and heavy cream. Enjoy a sweeter wine with this dulce dessert, like Bread and Roses Rosé. The Grenache in our Rosé makes for a sweeter taste pairing well with the final course!

Stuck on Margaritas?

A margarita without the bite!

If you love margaritas but don't like the taste of tequila, you can still enjoy this cocktail! Enjoy a Black Dog Margarita!

3 ounces of Shark in the Pond

2 squeezes of Fresh Lime Juice

1 ½ ounces of Cointreau or Triple Sec

Stir this delicious cocktail over ice and sip in your sombrero!
